Thanksgiving Week Sewing

Small bits of sewing on Christmas gifts this week.

Superhero capes waiting for snaps.

Teddy bears waiting for stuffing.

Finished eye masks.

Super heroes waiting to be stitched.

I have left them for last because I don't want to mess them up.

Still to do - PJs and shields.

Then the dress up sets - capes, shields, arm bands, masks, and belts.

Still snipping on the rag quilt.

So much snipping to do!

If there is time I will make a jumper/dress with this green fabric.

I think there is enough for a sleeveless dress.

Ava could wear it with tights and a long sleeve blouse.

A little sewing tomorrow.

Making 12 dozen cookies for a Christmas cookie sale this next week.

Rag Quilt in Progress

All the squares have been sewn.

144 double sided flannel squares.

The rag side below before snipping the seams.

It is 48 inches square, very weighty and soft.

I have been snipping the seams but it is really hard on my hands, even with spring assisted snips.

I made 4 more sleep masks but didn't take photos.

Next up-

Christmas presents

I am making Superhero sets for Kenton and Ava.

I have the blond boy cut out and have watched the how-to videos.

The boy and his bear have capes. There are masks, shields, and PJs.

The girl needs to be cut out.

I will begin sewing this week.

After the dolls and clothes are finished I hope to have time to make the matching

dress up sets and a soft book with puppets.

When I watch TV I'm working on some hand stitching.

Possible Christmas ornaments.

Flannel Week

We have been watching The Great British Baking Show. 

Instead of Pastry Week maybe the sewing equivalent could be Flannel Week.

This week I sewed up some of my flannel scraps.

I needed a sleep mask and found a free pattern online.

The first one was so quick and easy to make and I have so many flannel scraps.

More masks!

Mini clips were handy when sewing the closing.

I used a little bit of fleece for some of the masks.

The online directions have a very helpful hint - stack the batting on the top when sewing the layers together.

I had lots of colors of elastic in my stash, batting scraps, and flannel scraps.

Lots of flannel.

Finished masks.

Little miss saw them and took one for herself.

She liked the one with fleece on one side.

Then I started cutting flannel for a rag quilt.

Thanks to Doreen I have some very colorful strips of flannel.

I went for 5 inch squares and cut enough for 72 two sided blocks.

My original idea was to make the quilt 8 squares by 9 squares.

After making a few strips I realized my quilt would be very small and I had LOTS of scraps.

Change of plan -

above is half of the rag side of the quilt.

12 squares by 12 will be about 48 inches square.

Below is the smooth side.

Seventy-two more two sided squares ready to be sewn together.

Mini clips help me keep pairs in order.

I like the random colors.

I bought some spring assisted snips for cutting the raw edges.

Can't wait to finish and make it raggy.

New Month - Traveling Quilt Show & more

This weekend there was a traveling quilt show at Davies Manor.

Mini quilts 24 inches square. Flora and Fauna from around the world.

Quilters from Virginia created these mini quilts.

So cute!

Many different techniques.

I didn't get photos of all the quilts.

This one was my very favorite - pocket mouse bordered with blue jean pockets.

Next year's quilt show challenge.

I have an idea... not sharing yet.

I finished 6 placemats for Memphis Modern Quilt Guild.

I used some shared fabric with animals.

These will be donated to a senior center.

Someone will enjoy the animals.

I finished the block of the month for Uncommon Threads QG.

This month featured raw edge appliqué.

Next I want to bind My Small World so I can hand quilt it.

I know that is not the usual order of assembling a quilt but this will work for me.

The To-Do list is long.

Busy Week with very little sewing

This week has been so busy that I sewed very little.

The good news is my paper piecing book was delivered.

Now I have so many designs to make.

A couple of days were spent with this little bundle of energy.

And I loved every minute.

Our Clara Curtis/Country Girls are blooming after being transplanted in the heat this past summer.

Friday I had fun doing something outside of my usual sewing crafts.

Our public library offered a free painting class.

Rock painting!?

Ready for Halloween.

Now to the sewing portion of this post.

I made two placemats with fabric strips.

The back is a seersucker fabric.

The strips are leftovers from my box of Art Gallery fabric I won in the Fab Shop Hop many years ago.

Two made. Four more to make.

Memphis Modern Quilt Guild is donating placemats to a senior center for Thanksgiving.

They requested dark fabrics that wouldn't show spills.

Next week I should have more sewing time.

Paper Piecing Newbie

Paper piecing is a new endeavor for me.

I avoided paper piecing patterns for years.

Then UTQG's block of the month for October came up.

Lynn M. had an online session on how to make the paper pieced block.

Paper Piecing finally made sense!

This block was made from 8 sections sewn into 4 squares, then assembled into the block.

I wrote the fabric colors on each section.

Each square was sewn on the diagonal.

Two squares sewn together on top and bottom.

Paper removed and seams ironed open.

Finished!

After that I wanted to make a tea cup shaped mug rug.

The pattern I had was the one below.

I wanted a taller cup with less background at the top so

I drew a new pattern.

The handle had to move up, too.

I am very happy with the finish and I feel pretty confident with paper piecing.

I liked the tea cup so much I decided to make a tea themed wall hanging.

I pulled a shoe box full of fabric scraps to use.

First up, a tea pot in a fabric I really love.

I have a half yard and that may be enough for this project.

I had downloaded and printed the tea pot below.

It was too small so I enlarged it on my printer.

After enlarging the pattern I traced it in sections that I thought would work.

Oops! A foot photo. Haha.

I made the tea pot in 4 sections like the one below.

Look for more tea time blocks next week.

Other sewing-

What happened? A little girl I know cut her school uniform in several places.

She said she was bored but after working on repairing the dress, I think the dress may be the problem.

It smelled odd when I ironed it and the fabric is not as soft as little girl's other clothes.

I think she cut it so she wouldn't have to wear it.

Sometimes it is hard to tell big people how you feel when you are little.
